August 18th: Luke 24:36-52
Luke 24:36-52
45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
The work of Jesus was complete...kind of. The work necessary for the redemption of mankind was complete. The work necessary for the forgiveness of sins was complete. But making the good news known to the world was not yet done.
Jesus was now sending His disciples into the world to spread the good news. He was sending them to make know that there is salvation from sin, death, and the devil only through faith in Jesus Christ. He was sending them to proclaim that this salvation was available for all people.
The sending is still what the Church does today. Each Sunday we remind those who believe that their sins are forgiven and that salvation is theirs through Jesus. More than that, we don't just remind them, we deliver that salvation and forgiveness to them through Christ's means of grace (Baptism, Holy Communion, and the Word of God).
But the announcing of the good news of Jesus doesn't stop at the church doors, instead we are to make known to friends, family, and neighbors the good news of Jesus.
The late Ozwald Hoffman, who served as the Lutheran Hour Speaker for 33 years and also served the LCMS as director of Public Relations liked to say that he worked in PR, but he didn't mean public relation, rather by PR he meant Proclaiming the Redeemer.
May we as Christ's Church and as individuals redeemed by Jesus also take part in PR: proclaiming the Redeemer.
